Bottom right, Anna and Marie Hostetler step to the starting line prior to the start of the 3,000-meter run in Des Moines. Jeff Yoder/Kalona News Levi Duwa tosses the shot on the Drake Stadium infield on Thursday, April 27. Duwa advanced to the finals with a throw of 57-9 1/2, finishing seventh overall. Cory Stewart (800 meter) and Dan Burton (400 meter) also placed in the top 5. Donovan believes that Burton has really found his "bread and butter" in the 400 and said Stewart's excitement as he's progressed has been fun to see. "Cory Stewart has been work- ing his tail off with the 800's and at WACO it showed. He ran his fastest time yet and he looked fantastic," Donovan said. Mid-Prairie only sent the boys' team, but they did well by placing second in Class A. Only Washington fared better in the class than the Golden Hawks. The second place ffmish was made possible by a trio of first in the relays (1600 distance medley, 4x800 meter, and 4x400 meter) and a pair of relay seconds. Four individuals also re- ceived firsts. Kyle Miller took first in the high jump, with teammate Marshall Teets earn- ing runner-up honors. Teets earned a first for himself for his 400 meter run performance. Peyton Miller won the 1600 meter run and Cary Shcaefer won the 800 meter. IMS girls' track team fin- ished fifth of eight teams in Class B behind a lot of season- best times. These season-bests include Rubye Ney's second- place in the 400 meter hurdles, the sprint medley relay, the 4x400 meter relay, and Suzanna Yoder posted a season-best long jun/p and a personal best in the 200 meter. Emma Beachy won the dis- cus with a throw of 95'1". The season bests transferred over to the boys' side as well, ahead of their next competi- tion at conference. Adrian Gonzales added nearly two feet to his long jump and set a per- sonal record in the 200 meter. Logan Thomas also set per- sonal records in the 400 and 800 meter runs. "It is great to have everyone competing at their best level at this point of the season," coach Marty Gingerich said. Jim Wang and Adrian Vene- gas competed in their first com- petitions of the year for IMS.
