When Whitt became engaged and began plan- ning her move away from the Kalona area, Mel- lecker welcomed the opportunity to purchase the store at 413 B Avenue and renamed it the Pink Begonia. Mellecker noted that the "beautiful" pink awning on the store front and because the begonia is her favorite flower led her to re-name to store the Pink Begonia. She noted she always was impressed with the begonias her grandmother had. Mellecker is not new to Kalona or the shop at 413 B Avenue. She had already joined the shop as an antique dealer and had helped Stacy out part time. She and Stacy Leigh Whitt have been friends for about 13 years. "My aunt and uncle were antique dealers and I grew up with a passion for antiques" she remarked. Plus her grandparents, John and Mary Mellecker, lived just off Highway 1 between Kalona and Iowa City. In addition, Mellecker visited Kalona often with here mobile pet grooming service, Shear Pawfor- mance. She has been operating the mobile unit, which features a full service pet grooming facility including a bath tub. Specializing in long hair ani- mals, MeUecker was on the road taking care of ani- mals in Iowa City, North Liberty, Coralville, Amanas and Kalona area five days a week. A lover of animals, Mellecker has been grooming pets for 16 years and previously operated a retail pet store in Iowa City before starting the mobile grooming service. She has two dogs of her own. Eventually she plans to open a pet grooming shop at the rear of the Pink Begonia. She will groom the pets from 8 to 10 a.m. before opening the Pink Begonia at 10 a.m. Store hours will remain the same. Patrons will find few changes in the store, as it will still feature items from some 50 consignors and dealers. "I specialize in antiques, collectibles, handcrafts and vintage cottage dGcor," she noted. The store also features art consigned by area artists. She notes that the store will also continue to feature willow furniture made by Whitt's par- ents, John and Marcia Whitt. "They are coming out with a new painted willow furniture," she added. Helping her in the store will be two sisters Melanie Kurriger of Muscatine and Kathy Pelland of Iowa City. Her mother, Barbara Mellecker, of Tipton will also be helping out. She is also having the awning company patch in the Pink Begonia in th.e pink awning. t Lynelle Mellecker poses with an antique armoire in her new shop, The Pin Cuddle Bug owner Kristin Peiffer shows off some of the items available at the store locat- ed just at the top of the second floor stairs in the Pink Begonia, 413 B Avenue, Kalona. From page 1A - JAIL $905,000. Project cost to operate the new facility is $858,000. Total costs including $350,00 in bond pay- ments are projected at $1,1193,000. However, the county pro0jectws $219,000 in revenue from the work release program, $35,000 by charging prisoners $39 a day and $46,000 from tele- phone fees, canteen revenue and booking fees. These fees would reduce the jail costs by $300,000 making project jail operating costs of $893,000, or $12,000 less than the current budget. Ed Raber, director of the Washington Economic Develop- ment Group (WEDG), which is helping promote the new facility, points out the new jail is all about safety: safety of the pris- oners, safety of county employ- ees and safety for the public. Plus it keeps expenditure s for the jail in county and means additional county employees (jailers) without raising taxes.
