Through the years – the Old Fashioned Kalona Ice Cream Bar

I remember the first time I tried an Old-Fashioned Kalona Ice Cream Bar. It was fall 2008. Washington played Mid-Prairie in a football game. My best friend, a Kalona local, demanded I eat one. I nibbled a corner of the chocolatey outer crust. The crunch of the graham cracker tickled my taste buds as the delicate chocolate engulfed my throat. “All good foods have a crunch,” I thought to myself.
Crisp vanilla ice cream dribbled down the bar and into my mouth. My lips turned upwards into a smile as the mixture of tastes swirled together on my tongue. With each bite, I could feel the flavors fuse together into one magical, unforgettable treat. Ice cream would never be the same for me. The Old-Fashioned Kalona Bar is well-known in Kalona and surrounding areas. Crushed graham crackers are sprinkled on a hardened chocolate exterior that covers the treat served on a stick. Many love the Kalona bar but are unaware of how it originated. Here is brief history compiled from information from archived articles from the Kalona News and interviews with Janet Long, Leo Christener, Kenneth King, Beverly Mast and Steve Yotty.Archie Haberman invented the bar in 1940. He did so after buying his brother’s share of their creamery, Kalona Creamery, which was where Village Shoppe is now.
Haberman made a cutter to cut a quart into the ice cream bars. He would then dip them in chocolate and cover them with graham crackers. His children, Allen and Janet, helped him make hundreds of these bars. Haberman sold the ice cream bars from a couple of ice cream trucks that drove the streets of Kalona.
