All of them would much rather, that there was no need for war, but since the war has been forced upon our nation, they are ready to answer the call. The Kos car was crashed into from the rear when it slowed down to turn south on the street in front of the Walter Speas residence. Neither of the boys were injured but both machines were quite thrown into the ditch.Amos Hochstetler sustained a fractured ankle when he was kicked by a cow while demonstrating a milking machine.Grace Miller, Doris Marner, Katie Yoder, Arlie Hershberger and Audrey Swartzendruber left Saturday morning for Hannibal, Missouri where they will teach in the Bible school.Mr. and Mrs. R. Anderson lost a fine cow recently.50 years agoJune 1, 1967Coach Jackie Flake and her M-P girls will start the summer schedule of softball games at the Kalona diamond. Kalona Firemen were called about 11 p.m. Saturday evening to extinguish a rubbish fire near Deer Creek, west of the John Helmuth farm home.Firemen knocked the fire down and later in the night rain helped finish the job. Mr. Helmuth later reported he had set the fire in the brush and other rubbish that had been placed there. He had waited some time for trash to dry out so that it would burn easily.The Kalona Golf Club will sponsor lessons. Tim Grady will meet all interested persons at the Kalona football field.Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Meyers of Goshen visited during the weekend with relatives here. A true crowd pleaser was the apple butter made by 90-year old Martha Troyer.The Optimist club met at the park for Bike Safety. Forty-six children participated with winner of the girls bike going to Heather Bender and the boy’s bike was won by Sam Tribby. It is estimated that more than 10,000,000 men answered the call. In Iowa more than 200,000 were registered. In Johnson county the number was 2205.On Wednesday evening, June 6, Miss Laura Windess became the bride of Roy E. Gerot. The ceremony was performed at eight o’clock p.m. at the home of the bride’s parents with nearly fifty guests being present. They will go to housekeeping on the Gerot farm near Riverside.The annual Commencement exercises of the Lone Tree high school was held in the Fisher opera house Thursday evening when a class of thirteen, the largest in the history of the local high school, were presented with diplomas.Joseph Meisky passed away in Nichols Thursday morning after few days’ illness. He was 63 years of age. The cause of his death was ulcerated stomach. His funeral was held Saturday afternoon.Rev. E. D. Lantz arrived here from Abilene, Kansas Friday and has again taken up his work as pastor of the Reformed church.Troop B will be recruited to full war strength by the close of the week if volunteers continue to come as they have the past few days.Richard Huskins passed away at his home southwest of Lone Tree on Thursday evening, May 31st, after an illness of many months. He had reached the age of 66 years, 6 months and 19 days. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the M. E. church. Burial was made in the Lone Tree cemetery.Mr. James H. Bell and Miss Genevieve C. Harney were united in marriage at the home of the groom’s parents on Sunday, June 3rd at 1 o’clock. John Eden has been in the hospital at Iowa City for a week or more endeavoring to save his left eye which was pierced with a piece of wire on day last week and soon after became infected. There were 59 head averaging 273 pounds and brought $14.15 per cwt.At the regular meeting of Hukill Rebekah lodge Monday evening officers were elected. Mrs. Frances Plum was elected Noble Grand, Grace Richey as vice-grand, Mrs. Bessie Brinkmeyer as secretary, and Mrs. Anna Eden as treasurer.Dr. R. V. Mossman, D. V. M. opened an office here for the practice of veterinary medicine. Dr. Robert Mossman expects to take over his brother’s practice in this territory as his brother, Dr. Donald F. The couple will be married July 25 at Marr Park, Ainsworth.10 Years Ago June 7, 2007Financed primarily by a $50,000 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, the new EMS vehicle for the Riverside First Responders arrived in Riverside May 30. Total cost of the unit, the second in the Responders’ history, is $54,000. The 2001 ambulance was delivered by Kevin Kloucke, the dealer from Sterling, Ill., who obtained the vehicle for the Responders. The larger vehicle will allow the Responders to carry more equipment and provide even better service. The original Responders vehicle will be kept as a backup unit.The old public school building on the north end of Riverside may not get remodeled, said Bill Franz, Franz Construction, Iowa City, the new owner of the property. He told the Riverside council Monday night during a work session that he “wants to slow down the process” because bids to remodel the school were 25-30 percent higher than anticipated.Rain has not significantly slowed the construction schedule for Riverside’s new fire station. Last week, the steel spans went into place and framing is under way for the $1.4 million facility.WELLMAN ADVANCE100 Years AgoJune 7, 1917In spite of the weather man who had been giving us a super-abundance of rain and made roads almost impassable for automobiles, the patriotic services which were held in Wellman on registration day were attended by a large crowd.The forenoon program consisted of music by the martial band and a few selections by the Keota ladies’ band, who braved the muddy roads and made the fourteen-mile drive; drills by several members of the Cavalry, who came up from Kalona the evening before and were on hand bright and early. The Cavalry was joined by our members who secured horses from several of our citizens.On account of the muddy roads, the parade in the afternoon had to be called off, much to the regret of everyone, and the program was opened in the large lumber shed belonging to Gardner & Grassell.There has been a lot of “playing hookey” in our school the past few months. Now, it’s not the teachers’ business to run down absent scholars not to question the validity of the excuses turned in. But we make the suggestion: that if you are not satisfied with your child’s school work, look up the number of days present as shown on the report card; that may furnish a key to the situation.75 Years AgoJune 11, 1942A.C. Kraft, manager of the Wellman Cooperative Creamery, announces that the month of May exceeded all previous records in butter production through the local creamery. A total of 85,555 pounds was made by the co-op last month. This means that well over four and a half tons of butterfat were produced during the period by cows of cooperating farmers, returning them $28,000 for the butterfat. Of the 85,555 pounds, about five thousand were wrapped in individual pound cartons for local use. The remaining four tons were packed in tubs and shipped to New York markets.The $5.00 federal use tax stamp for all automobiles went on sale at the local post office Wednesday morning. The stamp is good for one year, ending June 30, 1943. Every automobile, without exception, must have this stamp prominently displayed. The deadline for purchasing this sticker is June 30. “Bud” Durian and Vernie Booth were the first to purchase the stamps Wednesday.The program of leveling and repairing walks in Wellman continues as various business houses on main street and several homes in the residential section are having the walks in front of their establishments smoothed out. Dr. R.W. Wirtz is putting in an entire new sidewalk around his building at the north end of main street.Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilkins received a letter Monday from their son Dean, who is in Australia now. He is to report for admission to the academy at West Point, N.Y., before noon on July 1.50 Years AgoJune 8, 1967Sp/4c Dale Schroeder has concluded a 30-day leave in the parental Adolph Schroeder home and has been assigned to an Army base in Germany.To reduce highway accidents involving farm vehicles, Iowa farmers should install slow-moving vehicle emblems on their farm tractors and other implements, and Iowa drivers need to recognize this emblem. The Iowa Legislature early this month passed a bill to encourage the emblem’s use and limit its use to vehicles which travel 25 miles an hour or less on highways. Triangular in shape, the reflective SMV emblem is 16 inches wide and 14 inches high. A fluorescent yellow/orange center is surrounded by a reflective red border.25 Years AgoJune 11, 1992Four Mid-Prairie faculty members with 129 years of combined teaching service in the district were bid farewell with great pomp and circumstance June 1. Retiring are Rhoda Hershberger, 30 years at Wellman Elementary; Paul Swank, junior and senior high vocational agriculture teacher for the past 28 years; Richard Oyer, 37 years as junior high math teacher; and Jacqueline Flake, 34 years as junior high science teacher and coach.Through special arrangement, Duder the clown came to Washington Township Elementary School to spend a half-day residency. The first part of the residency was spent with the sixth-graders analyzing humor. The students learned the reason that an act or a joke is funny is important to anyone who wants to write things that make people laugh.During the next portion, Duder showed students how he applies each part of his makeup in preparation for a show. He explained the purpose of the makeup, and his young audience watched him become a clown in front of their eyes. Duder forgot to explain that he is a Mid-Prairie graduate and receives his mail addressed to Rob McCain.10 Years AgoJune 7, 2007Fran Rogers’ last day at the Wellman-Scofield Public Library was Monday, June 4. She was assistant library director for 13 years, working 20 hours per week. Before that, she worked three hours per week on the card catalog. Even before that, she was a volunteer. Her work at the Wellman library, from volunteer to assistant director, spanned five directors -- Martha Boyes, Loris DeGroff, Holly Huffman, Sandy Aggson and current director Steve Miller. Rogers credits DeGroff with talking her into working more hours.Wellman’s new city administrator, David Ross, and his wife Kristin are putting down roots in Wellman. They purchased the Mark and Lisa Dosier house and plan to move into it within a couple of weeks. Dave, who began work in Wellman May 14, was born in Minnesota but moved with his family to Arizona when he was 3. He has been a police officer, a police detective, a police supervisor and most recently, an intern for the city manager in Cottonwood, Ariz.Edwin D. and Mary Jane Miller will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 17 with an open house at Kalona Mennonite Church. The Millers were married June 11, 1957, the first wedding to take place at Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church. Edwin Miller spent 38 years as an educator. He was the principal at Wellman Elementary School for 22 years.
