ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Highland sophomore Emily Yahnke competed in three events at this week’s Drake Relays.

All three events came during competition on Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m. with the 100 meter dash. Yahnke ran a 13.31 during the event, a time that she said has room for improvement.

“Probably my goal is to get under 12.5 maybe, I feel like part of the thing was me being in lane one,” Yahnke said. “I really like to be in the middle and having people to chase down.”

Her time of 13.31 was good for 28th place of the 32 runners in attendance. She was one of six freshman or sophomores to qualify for the event.

Her season low of 12.60 is the third fastest this season in Class 1A.

She then had a quick break before the 9:30 a.m. long jump, where she had a long of 16-feet 1.75 inches on her first jump to place 21st of 24 qualifiers.

Yahnke said a lot of her jumps were playing it safe as she left quite a bit of room from her takeoff to the line.

Yahnke’s long this season is a 17-foot 6-inch jump at Mediapolis, that stands at the top mark in Class 1A by three inches.

Yahnke then went on to anchor Highland’s 4x100 meter relay squad. She said the experience and competing with some of the top talent in the state will only push her to train and compete harder.

“It was good competition, so it pushed me and made me want to work harder because I want to be able to place at state in my events,” Yahnke said.
