ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The 22nd Annual Ainsworth Brinton Film Festival will be showing some of the world’s oldest films at the Ainsworth Opera House July 27 and 28.

Discovering these films has changed Michael Zahs’ life. Before discovering the films, he was a small town Iowan man. Now, he is well-known after traveling the world, showing the films.

“Many of the movies we will be showing at the festival are the only copies in existence, some dating back to 1908,” Zahs said.

The films were made by Frank Brinton, who travelled around to show the public project slides, films, and other entertainment back in 1985. Some of his films were even shown in the State Theatre located in Washington, which is the world’s longest running theater. The collections were found in an Iowa farmhouse, and have been preserved by Zahs.

Since then, Zahs has travelled around the world to show the early films. He recently got back from showing it in London, and plans to go to China in September to show it there.

“Saving Brinton” is a documentary that came out in September 2017 about Zahs and his journey showing the Brinton collections. It premiered at the State Theatre and has since then been shown around the world.

At Iowa’s longest running and most unique film festival, Zahs has more than 130 films to choose from to show at the event. Any film shown will have narration, and Zahs will be there to talk about the Brinton collection. The documentary will not be shown at the event, but Zahs said that they will talk about it and may show clips from it.

Along with the film festival, there will be an ice cream social provided by Dairy Mart. It is a freewill donation to attend the festival, and all proceeds go toward the opera house.
