Lone Tree

For awhile it looked like one of Lone Tree’s older businesses was going to close. But good news for Lone Tree residents who appreciate the convenience of a real grocery store within walking distance – LT’s Fine Grocery is not closing.

LT’s owner and manager, Ed Eden, debated whether he was going to sell or shut down for a long time. When asked he was sparse on the details. The answer was always the same. “I haven’t decided” was all he would say. His decision went public when his application to renew his liquor license was approved at this month’s city council meeting.

LT’s dates back to the Fire of 1940 when a fire that started in Johnsons’s Barber shop in the Gustave Herring building took out every building on the west side of Devoe Street from the alley north to the Lone Tree Bank on the corner of Devoe and Commercial.

The lot, 117 N. Devoe, stood empty for seven years until it was purchased by Robert Shallady who built a one-story grocery on the site. Roger Stahle managed the store for him for the next decade. The grocery went through several more owners and managers until Jerry Roller purchased the business in the 1970’s and added the second story apartment. He then moved the store to its present location at 203 N. Devoe. There’s still an inscription, barely visible, in the concrete pavement at the south entrance to the parking lot. It says “Yakish Construction 1982.”
