Mattie Beachy

1921 - 2017

Mattie (Miller) Beachy, 95, died Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona. A funeral service was held Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church with Pastors Floyd Helmuth, Andy Shimko, Joel Beachy officiating. Burial followed at the South Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Crowded Closet.

Mattie (Miller) Beachy was born May 17, 1921 in Amboy, Ind., the daughter of Oba J. and Anna (Yoder) Miller. On December 18, 1941 she was united in marriage to Floyd Beachy in Amboy. She was a member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church where she was active in the sewing circle, and a charter volunteer at the Crowded Closet. Mattie enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, baking and was very creative in the way she decorated her home. She was a gifted listener, and that attribute gained her a multitude of friends throughout her life. Mattie will be remembered as a non-judgmental confidant that accepted and loved people unconditionally.

Survivors include five children: Anna Ruth (J. Daniel) Martin of York, Pa., Wayne (Judy) Beachy of Kalona, Ray (Sue) Beachy of Jackson, N.J., John Beachy (Patrea Hamm) of Centerville, Iowa, Brent Beachy of Kalona; 10 grandchildren: Gregory Beachy, Jonathan (Anita) Beachy, Timothy (Elena) Beachy, Scott (Michelle) Beachy, Joel (Christine) Beachy, Eirik (Celeste) Martin, Rebecca (Tom) Miller, Sheila Beachy, Anneke Martin (Guille), Elizabeth (Steven) Rhodes; 13 great-grandchildren: Burgene and Brynn Illingworth, Marina, Lilou and Maelys Beachy, Brandon Beachy, Josiah and Lydia Beachy, Ava and Jack Miller, Solomon Martin, Isaac and Lucas Beachy; three sisters: Lydia (Ernest) Beachey of Kokomo, Ind., Erma (Ray) Nissley of Goshen, Ind., Elsie (Don) Horner of Kokomo, Ind.; and two sisters-in-law: Marie Miller and Pat Miller of Kokomo, Ind.

Preceding Mattie in death were her parents; her husband: Floyd; one sister: Ada Miller; five brothers: Dan, Menno, William, Clarence and Ervin Miller.
