ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The City of Wellman continued its work toward updating city ordinances.

At its Monday meeting, the City Council discussed updates to the city’s animal and nuisance property ordinances.

The council reviewed a proposed new chapter to the nuisance property ordinance.

The proposed new chapter outlines responsibilities for property maintenance, including keeping structures in good repair, repairing or replacing broken doors and windows, keeping basements free of standing water and vermin and maintaining roofs and drainage.

“This is a whole new chapter,” City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said. “This chapter is not in our code right now.”

Councilman Bob Goodrich said that the city has higher priorities on which to focus regarding nuisance properties.

“We’ve got a lot of other nuisances we should do before we do that,” Goodrich said.

The question comes down to who is tasked with enforcing the codes, according to Goodrich.
