Where does one put a barn quilt? If not on a barn, is it then just a quilt square? These are the questions that haunt the Riverside City Council.

Monday night, in a 3½-hourlong meeting, the Riverside City Council spent a chunk of time on one specific topic: the barn quilt. They could not agree on a location to put the barn quilt.

The quilt square depicts the city’s connection to Star Trek. When it was in front of the museum on Highway 22, many motorists stopped to pose and take a photo.

Councilman Robert Schneider Jr. proposed putting it on the fire station, so everyone could see it. Councilman Tom Sexton seconded his motion.

Councilman Robert Weber spoke in opposition

“I’m not opposed to the fire station, but it is called a barn quilt not by design, but by location,” Weber said.

City Clerk Lory Young voiced concern about the quilt being a safety hazard. She said some may come take pictures of the quilt and be in the way of the firefighters if it were on the fire station.

Weber said this would not be an issue with the fire alarm.

When put to a vote, Robert Schneider and Sexton voted in favor.
