The Gator Bowl was a success in two ways for the Mid-Prairie football team.

The first, was monetarily. In their annual player auction the Golden Hawks raised $14,000 for the football program according to head coach Pete Cavanagh.

“Over $14,000 was raised Friday night! The coaches and players are humbled and very thankful for all the families and businesses that donated,” he said.

The fundraiser has players donate four hours of time in return for a donation to the football program.

With the fundraiser the team will be able to purchase new junior varsity jerseys next season, new varsity jerseys within the next year or two, new footballs, new tackling dummies for the middle school football teams, varsity team camp fees for next year and pay coaching stipends.

Cavanagh said he wanted to thank Dwight Duwa, who donated his time as an auctioneer for the fundraiser.

The second success was a final tune up before the season begins. The Golden Hawks took part in a scrimmage with Iowa City Regina as both the varsity and junior varsity teams were able to work out the kinks before their first games this week.

The Gator Bowl also included an inter-squad volleyball scrimmage prior to the football scrimmage. The boys and girls cross country teams were introduced prior to the football scrimmage. The football cheerleaders were also introduced.

Mid-Prairie football kicks off their season next week with a road game at Grinnell High School.
