Last week’s special election settled one seat on the Mid-Prairie school board, but board members have another vacancy to address.

The board announced its intention to appoint a new board member at its Sept. 10 meeting to fill the seat vacated by Jim Hussey, who resigned effective Aug. 27.

Board President Jeremy Pickard said that the board is accepting recommendations from the public for board consideration.

Whoever is appointed to the board will serve out Hussey’s unexpired term, which runs until the next regular school election in November 2019.

Anyone interested in serving on the school board should contact board Secretary Jeff Swartzentruber at the district central office in Wellman.

The deadline to express interest in the vacancy is 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, prior to the start of the next school board meeting.

District residents have the option to call for a special election as well.

A petition containing at least 100 signatures of registered voters in the district would have to be submitted on or before Thursday, Sept. 13 in order to trigger a special election.

After board member George Schaefer resigned in June, the board appointed Emily Uhl to fill the vacancy.

However, a petition was submitted triggering last Tuesday’s special election, in which Uhl defeated former board member Randy Billups.
