ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Highland Elementary School continues to grow.

When classes start on Aug. 23, there will be 17 more students than there were last year, a 6 percent increase.

And that number could change.

“Keep in mind not all students have registered yet,” Principal Jane O’Leary told the Highland school board Monday night.

The sizes of each grade fluctuate wildly, with some approaching 50 students while the third-grade only has 31 students. The largest grade is the second-graders with 50 students. The kindergarteners are right behind with 49.

Comparing each grade to last year – that is last year’s kindergarten class compared with this year’s first-grade class – there is a net increase of 13 students, 20 new students and seven students leaving the district.

Enrollment numbers do not solidify until after school starts when administrators see who shows up and who does not. O’Leary said she is still waiting on 90 students to register as of Aug. 13.
