Former correspondent Jacqueline Smetak has taken over as office manager and reporter of the Kalona News office in Lone Tree.

“I’m originally from Chicago,” Smetak said. “I came to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa. I relocated to Lone Tree in 2004. I’ve taught at the University of Iowa, Iowa State and a couple of community colleges. I’ve also worked in publishing. I spent a year as an assistant editor for the State Historical Society of Iowa and four years with an alternative newspaper in Ames. And I worked for the Lone Tree Reporter in 2005-06.”

She called her stint at the Lone Tree Reporter “an interesting introduction to the town.”

“I had a chance to read through back issues and learned quite a bit about the history of this place and this newspaper,” Smetak said.

Smetak replaces Kris Rife who resigned from her position due to health issues. Rife had been employed at the Lone Tree office since 2009 as office manager, reporter and the author of “Looking Back.”

On occasion she wrote her dad’s column, “On the Back Roads.”

Office hours for the Kalona News Lone Tree office are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The office is closed Wednesdays and weekends.

You can reach Smetak at 319-629-5207 or at
