The Wellman Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 125th anniversary with an open house on from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9.

“One hundred twenty-five years is pretty monumental for any small town fire department,” training officer Tracy Owens said.

He said that the public is invited to the open house, as well as a number of retired Wellman firefighters.

“We’re inviting who we can,” Owens said. “It’s more of a social time, and more for the older guys. We want to say thank you to them and hope the community will respond.”

Owens added that there are seven current firefighters with more than 20 years of service to the department.

“We added it up the other night, and it was something like 275 years,” he said. “I don’t know nationwide if that’s normal for a department to have people stay on that long.”

Jack Seward Sr. has 65 years with the department, while Jim Millice had 59 years of service.

“Jim is probably one of the most key people on the department,” Owens said, noting that Millice was named Wellman Firefighter of the Year last year. “He tends to everything from the kitchen stuff to what’s going on down at the shop.”
