ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The city of Wellman is going to take an in-depth look at its water system.

On Monday, the City Council approved a contract with Fox Engineering of Ames to do a complete water system evaluation.

“They will listen to our priorities and move in a direction that is mutually agreeable, not just what they say should be done,” Water Superintendent Tim Garrett said.

Mayor Ryan Miller added, “This will provide a different set of eyes on the system. This will give us a better idea on how to maintain the system and be more efficient.”

According to the contract, Fox will:

• Prepare a preliminary planning-level cost opinion to replace the entire water distribution system and service connections.

• Evaluate options to improve reliability with the water supply.

• Evaluate options to address the operational and maintenance issues at the treatment plant.

The total cost of the study will be $27,600.

“We’ve spent a lot of money on our water and sewer plants,” Miller said. “We want to get the best use of them.”

Councilman Shannon McCain said that the cost of the study would be made up with improved efficiency of the system.

“It’s a wash,” McCain said. “It’s a no-brainer.”
