In 1986 William Shatner made a never-to-be-forgotten appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” He was overwhelmed by Trekkers wanting to know every little thing about every little thing, until, frustrated beyond endurance, Shatner stopped, took a deep breath, and said “Get a life! For crying out loud, it’s just a TV show.”

But for fans of the cult classic “Star Trek,” the pleasure is in the details. And for fans, John and Maria Jose Tenuto, who are professors at The College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill., offered up a plateful.

How many fans have noticed that R2D2 from “Star Wars” made cameo appearances in “Star Trek” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” or that the Millennium Falcon shows up in “Star Trek: First Contact.” That may be because Star Trek movies and TV spin-offs sometimes used the Star Wars animation shop, Industrial Light and Magic, for their special effects.

The subject was “Art Thrives on Limitations: The Making of Nicholas Meyer’s ‘Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.’” It was based on photographs and notes from the University of Iowa archives.
