The Kalona Historical Society and Kalona Public Library have been busy with a large-scale scanning project. This project includes scanning and cataloging historical photos of Kalona and the surrounding area.

For the past two years, a team of volunteers has been helping archive photos of the area’s people, places and businesses.

Soon the State Library of Iowa will post their work into its Iowa Heritage Digital Collection.

Normally older materials like historical photos and documents are not readily available to the public. They are often too fragile or rare to display them openly.

However, with the assistance of state library staff members like Pamela Rees, Kalona’s historical past will be made available to future generations through the Iowa Heritage initiative.

This cooperative scanning project will continue as more local historical photos, letters, books or newspaper articles become available. In fact, local residents will be given an opportunity to share their historical information at a scan day. The scan day will be held in the spring at Kalona Public Library. Dates and details will be publicized.

Donations of historical artifacts are welcome as the Kalona Historical Society develops plans for the new Wahl Museum to be added to Kalona Historical Village.

Those who wish to donate items for possible exhibits may contact Nancy Roth at 319-656-3232.
