ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Lone Tree school board, at its meeting July 12 meeting, voted to purchase the Abner Masonic Lodge at 304 S. Devoe for $23,000.

The house is a classic American foursquare in the Craftsman style, a style popular between 1900 and 1930 and influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. There are many other foursquares in town, but the Masonic Lodge is distinctive for its deep wraparound veranda and its curved Chinese style roof.

The Abner Lodge purchased the building in 1941 from the estate of John Musser. The previous lodge had burned to the ground in the downtown fire of 1940 that destroyed half the buildings on the west side of the 100 block of Devoe.

The Abner Lodge was an active part of the community – it was used as a site for temporary classrooms when the school burned in 1956 – up into the 1980s, when it began a slow decline in membership.

The building has stood mostly empty for the better part of 20 years and is now much the worse for neglect and vandalism. Plans are to demolish the house and replace it with a parking lot.
