ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

During a visit to the area earlier this summer, Phil Pennington of Harrisburg, Ohio, learned that RAGBRAI would be coming through in late July.

Pennington knew his uncle, the late Milo Stransky, had ridden in RAGBRAI in the early 1980s. After conferring with his cousins – Stransky’s grandsons – Rod and Dean Smith, avid cyclists themselves, Pennington decided he would ride the Friday leg of RAGBRAI from Sigourney to Iowa City to honor his uncle.

“We wanted to honor Milo Stransky and his family,” Pennington said. “I was vaguely aware Milo rode in RAGBRAI.”

Stransky, who owned a meat market in Riverside, rode in RAGBRAI in 1982, 1983 and 1984 when he was in his early 70s.

Rod Smith remembered that it was a family affair.

“He rode with the whole family,” he said. “There was no camper, just an eight-man tent with cots that we had to take down and set up each day.”
