In November, state Sen. Kevin Kinney held a town hall meeting in North Liberty to discuss jobs in Iowa. Despite good schools and a high graduation rate, Kinney said Iowa has a surprising lack of people with the skills employers want and need.

Lone Tree has chosen to respond to this gap between education and the needs of the workplace with a series of field trips in connection with Kirkwood Community College.

On Jan. 25, Lone Tree’s college and career counselor, Shelby Brice, took a group of 10th-graders to visit the Iowa national advanced driving simulator and Rockwell Collins plant in Coralville.

“I’ve been taking these trips with students for eight years,” Brice said. “All grades have different themes. Ninth-graders toured the University of Iowa Hospital for a health tour. Tenth-graders attended these two locations for a STEM tour. Eighth-graders will attend a Financial Literacy Fair.”

“The tour is designed to explore fields of science, technology, engineering and math,” Brice said of the 10th-grade trip. “The goal is to have students experience more career options so they can make a more educated decision on what they would like to pursue after high school and enjoy doing as a career.”
