ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The parking lot at Highland Elementary School in Riverside took on an agricultural theme on Friday afternoon.

FFA students from Highland High School put on a petting zoo and farm safety day for the elementary school students.

“Today we’re combining two activities,” Duane Van Winkel, Highland High School FFA advisor, said. “We’re doing an animal day with the petting zoo for the lower elementary students here at Highland Elementary, and we’re doing a farm safety day for the upper elementary students.”

Highland FFA students brought their own animals for the petting zoo.

“At the petting zoo, we’ve got a couple calves, a couple lambs, a chicken and a duck, goats, a rabbit and a pig,” Van Winkel said. “All of my students volunteered to bring in their various livestock and animals to share this day. We’re grateful for that.”

He added that he was also grateful for the support of the FFA parents.

“The parents have supported it,” he said. “A few parents drove livestock trailers in, and they stayed.”

The young students took turns petting and holding the animals, often expressing excitement and amazement.

The older elementary students went through farm safety stations, getting information on various equipment.

“The different stations that we have are an ATV, a lawn mower, a side-by-side, as well as tractor safety,” Van Winkel said. “We want to introduce a lot of kids who are not on the farm a lot, but if they’re visiting a friend or whatever, they may get exposed to some of these things if they’re not familiar with them.”
