ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

FORT DODGE - Last year, Levi Geyer battled plantar fasciitis during the cross country season and was only able to compete several times. As a sophomore, he finished 50th in the state-qualifying meet with a time of 18:39.

This year, the Iowa Mennonite junior finished 13th in state-qualifying and on Saturday finished 25th in the boys 1A State Cross Country Championships in Fort Dodge with a time of 17:27.9.

“He has worked hard to manage the injury again this season to keep it from hindering his training,” Coach Marty Gingerich said. “All his training and racing has been in training shoes as a result of his intense injury management. Levi tested spikes Thursday in practice and wore them for the race Saturday for the first time in the past two years.”

Geyer finished his season with the best race of his career, finishing ahead of all but three of the 12 runners who beat him at the state-qualifier in Cedar Rapids.

“I was excited to place 25th in this race, I had expected to get about 50th place,” Geyer said.

“I was very happy with my performance at the state meet. I prepared myself well and ran a good race. I PR-ed and beat several people that I had never beaten before.”

Geyer ran strategically, not allowing adrenaline and the competitive atmosphere to make him start too fast.

“I was nervous before the race,” Geyer recalled, “I think that most everybody was. I knew in my mind that this meet was more important than any other meet, but I tried not to let that influence me.”

Geyer ran mile splits of 5:38, 5:33 and 5:40 for the first, second, and third miles of the race.
