June 8, 2017 IMS earns first win with sixth-inning offensive barrage

IMS was clinging to a 7-5 lead with one out and no one on base in the bottom of the sixth inning against Columbus on Monday. By the time the Wildcats got a second out, the two-run lead had been stretched to eight.

Calli Shaw’s single scored two more runs and sent everyone home early, as the 10-run rule came into effect after an eight-run sixth inning.

It was the first win of the season for Iowa Mennonite.

Earlier in the game, a 15-run night seemed unlikely. IMS had just two hits through three innings and trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning.

Mia Graber singled to lead off the inning followed by a walk from Rachel Miller. Four consecutive run-scoring singles followed. Alyssa Gonzales, Joya Schrock, Suzanna Yoder and Rubye Ney each drove in a run as IMS took the lead before making the first out of the inning.

“They just hung in there, we got ourselves out of quite a few jams,” IMS coach Kathryn Ney said. “Columbus had runners on, I think, in every inning.
