WELLMAN - The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks had four players on the All-District first team when selections were announced last week.

Mid-Prairie had a 37-point average margin of victory over the final three games of the season to finish fourth in the district with a record of 5-4.

Senior running back Ricky Vargas was a first team selection after rushing for a district-high 1,304 yards. Vargas ended up with the ball on 179 of Mid-Prairie’s 467 offensive plays and accounted for over 44% of the Golden Hawks’ total offensive yardage for the season. He was the fifth Golden Hawk to score 21 touchdowns in a season, and the fourth to reach 2,500 career rushing yards with a total of 2,592. Vargas also led the Golden Hawks and finished seventh in the district with 51 tackles.

Senior defensive lineman Levi Duwa was named to the first team, despite missing the last three games of the season with a foot injury. Duwa still finished in the top-10 in the district with nine solo tackles for loss. He had 29.5 total tackles and 3.5 sacks, finishing his career with 22 sacks and 46 tackles for loss. He caught 13 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. He finished his career with nine touchdown catches, which ranks third on the Mid-Prairie all-time list, and his 673 receiving yards rank seventh.

Golden Hawk junior offensive lineman Jason Tew was named to the first team, anchoring an inexperienced offensive line that improved over the season. The Golden Hawks rushed for 6.5/yards per carry, the sixth-best average in Class 2A.

Terrhyn Jacoby was named to the first team as a kicker. The junior connected on three of four field goal attempts, with a long of 40. He was also 36-38 for the season on extra-point attempts and had 29 touchbacks on 53 kickoffs. He also led Mid-Prairie with 184 receiving yards.

Senior defensive lineman Jared Miller was named to the second team after finishing the season with 19 tackles, including seven for loss. Miller and the Golden Hawk defense stepped up to hold opponents to just 12 points a game after losing Levi Duwa for the season.

A pair of junior linebackers represented the Mid-Prairie defense on the second team as well. Keaton Duwa finished the season with 44 tackles, 4.5 for loss, while Karson Gingerich recorded 37.5 tackles.

Gingerich was 48-100 for 651 yards and seven touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball. He was the only player in the district to throw more than 40 times and finish with fewer than four interceptions.

Duwa finished with 9.3 yards per carry for a total of 629 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Senior Duncan McCain and sophomore Justin Schwartz received honorable mention. McCain led the defensive backfield with 45.5 tackles, while Schwartz had a team-high 13 receptions for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
