ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

On Tuesday, July 24, the Washington County Supervisors approved driveway paving and north fence replacement at the Washington County Recycling Center, following a report from Lynn Whaley of WEMIGA Waste System, which operates the county-owned facility.

The contractor is Coleman Construction of Winfield, which submitted a proposal to remove and replace existing concrete, bore new postholes for the fencing and install new posts in a concrete base for $445,511.

The chain link fencing cost is $8,440 and already is in the current budget. Work will be done in September, the board was told.

In other business, the board:

• Learned that Cook Appraisals of Cedar Rapids is inspecting the Federation Bank building that was offered to the county for $1.6 million with a view of what would be involved in remodeling it for county office use.

• Received the weekly engineer’s report, which noted that Riverside Road is open and that shoulders and highway painting is done. Work continues on the 275th Street bridge decking, as well as on 229th Street (G36) and Coppock Road (W47). There also have been positive public comments about the Riverside Road project.

• Received annual, semi-annual and quarterly reports from the treasurer’s office showing a current treasurer’s fund balance of $12.5 million.

• Named Washington State Bank, Federation Bank, Hills Bank & Trust, CBI Bank and the Iowa Public Agency Investment Trust as county depositories.

• Accepted the auditor’s report showing a total of $815 collected in quarterly funds for the period ending June 30. The largest single sale amount was $180 for copies of the new plat books.

• Learned that landfill item collection was 93.14 tons in June, up 17.61 from the same time last year.

• Recessed until 11 a.m. to allow time for county attorney to review the 911 radio equipment contract.
