Highland’s fifth-grade class recently opened a store in the school building and by all accounts, it’s been a tremendous success. During the first week of operation eager grade school students lined up and bought out the store’s entire inventory.

The store is the project of fifth-grade teacher Johannah Vittetoe and her students. It began with a grant of $250 from the Highland Elementary Support Organization. The organization is a group of parents, teachers and community members who provide support to the children and teachers of Highland Elementary. The grant was used to purchase supplies, equipment and inventory to get the store up and running.

The store, which is actually a cart displaying merchandise and holding the cash box, is located in Vittetoe’s classroom and is open for sales Tuesday through Thursday from 8 to 8:30 a.m. It currently sells school-related items like pencils, pens and erasers. All items are priced at $1.25 or less.

The store provides more than fun for the fifth-graders and pencils for their customers. It teaches them about pricing, reinvestment, and customer service in a real life setting.

Initially the store was located in the hall outside Vittetoe’s classroom but it was moved inside the room because it started to attract a crowd.

“Kids lined up to purchase items blocked the entire corridor,” Vittetoe said.

The lines still snake down the hall she added, but it’s easier to manage with the cart inside the room.
