As Hurricane Irma was bearing down on Florida, Sarah Counter, who used to live in the Sunshine State, felt the urge to do something. While watching the state get battered by the category four storm, she and her girlfriend Emily Curtis made the decision to go down and help.

As the pair made their intentions known, more people joined their group to make the 22-hour trip to Port St. Lucie. The group included Counter’s former coworker Christina Boshart, a fellow New Life church member Trevor Shane, and Curtis’ daughter Alysan Beckler, but details were still an issue.

“I had a group of people, I didn’t have a vehicle. At the beginning of the week, I had no money for gas and food and stuff like that, and I didn’t know where I was going,” Counter said.
