ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Lone Tree is a compact small town with everything within walking distance and every house within what is essentially one neighborhood. The exception is the Finley subdivision on the far north end of the city. It is separated from the city by a half mile of cornfield and limited access to the rest of town.

Those who live there can either drive east on Highway 22 to the intersection at Wapsi Avenue and then another half mile into town. Or they can walk.

But walking is not a safe option for children. There are no sidewalks and steep inclines into deep ditches on either side of both Highway 22 and Wapsi making this a difficult walk for anyone.

There are two other ways in. One is a narrow dirt path connecting Perkins to North Perkins Street. It is picturesque but overgrown, crossed by a small muddy stream and infested with poison ivy.

The other option is a mowed path wide enough to accommodate golf carts and ATVs that runs from Huskins along a fence line to North Perkins. Access, however, is hindered by a ditch on the Huskins side.

The Lone Tree City Council is scheduled to discuss options for connecting the subdivision to the rest of the city at a July council meeting.
