It looks like Riverside voters will decide who fills former Councilman Rob Weber’s seat on the council.

City Clerk Becky LaRoche said a petition was filed last week requesting an election to fill the open seat.

LaRoche forwarded the petition to the county auditor’s office, which will set a date for the election.

The earliest date will be Dec. 11, La Roche said.

Petition signatures will be validated by the auditor’s office, but LaRoche does not think there will be an issue.

“There were plenty of signatures,” LaRoche said, adding that 31 signatures were required and more than 80 were submitted.

The petition was filed by Christine Kirkwood, Kevin Kiene and Kevin Mills. Mills was one of three people who applied to be appointed to the vacant seat by the City Council.

The council on Sept. 10 appointed former longtime Councilman Ralph Schnoebelen to fill the seat until the end of the term in December 2019.

Schnoebelen was appointed on a 3-1 vote with Councilman Tom Sexton voting no. Sexton had made a motion to appoint Mills to the seat, but his motion failed to get a second.
