Highland opens season with impressive win

Trey Lasek’s junior year got off to quite the start as he made his presence known all over the field and he helped Highland pull out a 36-14 victory.

Lasek accounted for three offensive touchdowns with two rushing and one passing. He also added a 60-yard pick six, one of three turnovers forced on the night by Lasek.

“I was trying to be all over the place …This group needs a leader, we’re pretty young and (with) not a lot of experience, and I’m just trying to step up and be that role model for those guys and make plays,” Lasek said.

Make plays he did, both in the run and passing game, with the success in the former helping him be successful in the latter. With Lasek being such a threat to run, he was able to bait defenders to come up as he got outside the pocket opening up the top end of the defense.

“I love when I get on the outside and those (defensive backs) start coming up towards me. We work a lot on broken plays in practice,” Lasek said.

Things took a while for the offensive success to turn into points for the Huskies. Lasek coughed up the ball on their second drive on the eight yard line and North Mahaska took advantage with the aid of a 74-yard draw play on third and nine to take an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.
