ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

In November 1956, a Kalona tradition began with the first Pleasantview Home Benefit Sale.

This weekend, that tradition continues with the 63rd annual benefit sale.

“It’s all about community and the whole idea of people coming together to support a common cause,” Pleasantview’s Director of Advancement Larry Swartzendruber said. “One of our core values is stressing community. For it to be going for 63 years tells me the community really does get behind it.”

Executive Administrator Nick Jedlicka added, “It brings a huge cross section of the Kalona community together. It’s great fellowship. There’s tons of people there to visit with.”

For the first 55 years, the benefit sale was held at the Kalona Sales Barn.

“Years ago, there was actual livestock auctioned at the sale, so it made sense to have it there,” Jedlicka said. “If you look back through the years, the timetable for the event expanded.”

As the scope of the sale changed and expanded, the event was moved to Iowa Mennonite School, which continues to host the sale.

This year’s event begins at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2 with a turkey tenderloin meal and a silent auction. The meal runs until 7:30 p.m., and is by donation.

Friday entertainment will be provided by the Sharon Bethel Men’s Quartet and the Wellman Mennonite Church Worship Team.
