ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

As of Tuesday, Nov. 16,, two candidates have submitted papers to run for the Riverside City Council seat vacated when Rob Weber moved from the city.

Ralph Schnoebelen filed to run for the seat that he was appointed to fill by the council, according to City Clerk Becky LaRoche.

Following his appointment, residents submitted a petition calling for a special election.

Edgar McGuire filed his papers for the election on Friday, Nov. 9, LaRoche said.

Nomination papers are now available at the Washington County auditor’s office for residents who are interested in running for the position.

A special election will be held on Dec. 11, noon to 8 p.m..

The petition requesting the special election was filed by Christine Kirkwood, Kevin Kiene and Kevin Mills. Mills was one of three people who applied to be appointed to the Weber’s vacant seat on the council.

Weber’s term ends in December 2019, so the election would be to fill the seat for just over a year.

The petition filed to request the election was signed by more than 80 people; only 31 were needed.

Schnoebelen, who was appointed to the council to fill Weber’s seat on Sept. 10, will continue to serve until the special election.

Schnoebelen was appointed on a 3-1 vote with Councilman Tom Sexton voting no. Sexton had made a motion to appoint Mills, but his motion failed to get a second.

In September, LaRoche estimated the cost of the special election would be about $2,000.The nomination petition filing period to get on the ballot ends Friday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m.

The petition needs at least 10 signatures from Riverside residents who are eligible electors and should be filed with the city clerk.
