ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Anyone traveling along Highway 1 north of Kalona has noticed a series of new power poles being placed along the roadway.

These new poles and power lines are part of a power transmission upgrade being done by ITC Midwest all around the state.

“We are rebuilding the existing 34.5 kilovolt lines to a 69 kilovolt line,” Rod Pritchard, ITC marketing and communications manager said. “This will modernize the system and make it more reliable and bring it up to today’s standards.”

The project along Highway 1 runs six miles from Frytown south to the new substation being constructed by Alliant Energy at the intersection of Highways 1 and 22.

At the substation, ITC is constructing seven steel poles with concrete bases.

Pritchard said that crews can pour the concrete bases at a pace of one per day.

Last week, crews began stringing wire along the poles that are already in place.

The project began in April and is expected to continue through September.

“The project is on track to finish up at the end of September,” Pritchard said.
