Anthony McCoy, 37, was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday, Aug. 3 on three charges related to the death of his 17-month-old daughter.

McCoy, who pleaded guilty to the charges in May, was sentenced to two years in prison on each of two counts of child endangerment and up to five years in prison on a count of involuntary manslaughter.

The child endangerment charges are aggravated misdemeanors, while the involuntary manslaughter charge is a Class D felony.

The sentence was given by Washington District Court Judge Joel Yates.

The child, Avery McCoy, was discovered unresponsive on Nov. 9, 2016.

According to court documents, Anthony McCoy admitted to not bringing his daughter to various scheduled appointments with a pediatric specialist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the months prior to her death.

Her mother, Abrashia “Amber” Chrzan was convicted in May of child endangerment resulting in death, and sentenced in July to 50 years in prison.

During Chrzan’s trial, prosecutors pointed out that Avery weighed 15 pounds in January 2016. The child weighed 11 pounds at the time of her death, according to investigators.

At a July 5, 2016, doctor’s appointment, it was noted that Avery was failing to thrive and had dropped from the 10th percentile in growth to below 1 percent.
