ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Wellman

During their Dec. 4 meeting, the Wellman City Council looked at how the city’s nuisance policy has been working.

Wellman City Adminstrator Kelly Litwiller said the city is limited by the time and effort it puts into dealing with the nuiscance properties, especially with repeat offenders.

Litwiller gave one property that had been cleaned up prior to being abated as an example. This property was beginning to slip towards being considered a nuisance again, but since the property was cleaned before abatement, the cycle of notifications will have to start all over again.

Council member Bob Goodrich suggested paying a city employee an extra 50 cents or $1 per hour to keep an eye on nuisance properties to try to take some of the work off the city’s hands.

Council members agreed to look into a couple volunteer options, including having Rotary assemble groups of volunteers from within neighborhoods and using students working towards their silver chords.
