ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Washington County Extension office held a Parachutes - A Long Way Down Day Camp on June 5 in Washington and June 7 in Riverside. Both days contained the same engineering ideas and excitement.

The campers enjoyed a full day of being engineers in training. All participants experimented with different materials to construct the slowest falling parachute. They also made plans to conduct an outer space expedition and designed their transportation to their planet location. They learned about drag, aerospace engineers, and atmospheres. The highlight of the day was creating their own parachutes and being able to test them from our drop site.

Washington County Extension hosts a variety of day camp offerings throughout the summer through their Clover University program. There are camps for ages kindergarten to eighth grade and offered in five communities around the county. Space is still available at some camps. Contact the Washington County Extension office for a complete camp listing or at www.extension.iastate.edu/washington.

For more information about the Washington County 4-H program, contact the Washington County Extension office, 319-653-4811.
