Meg Nagel’s childhood was unique compared to most as she spent a lot of her time around dead bodies by helping her father, H. E. (Short) Peterseim, dress and prepare a body for a funeral.

Kalona’s funeral home was recognized at the Town Builders event held in the Kalona Historical Village on July 10. Peterseim Funeral Home, started in 1917, marked its 100th year in business last year.

“I always seemed to be around dead bodies, so at age 7 or 8, it didn’t seem like a strange thing,” Nagel said.

After graduating from college, Nagel came back to her home to help with the family business, and has been helping for 25 years now. She felt like this was the job for her because she had a lot of experience doing it from helping her dad out for so many years.

Town Builders started off with people playing trivia that had questions regarding Kalona’s past businesses. Once finished, Nagel gave a brief presentation.
