Mid-Prairie football will kick off their regular season Friday night with an away opener against Louisa-Muscatine.

When the Golden Hawks head into the game they’ll be starting from a blank slate according to Head Coach Pete Cavanagh.

“We’re just working on what we’re doing and what we do,” Cavanagh said. “We don’t have much of a scouting report on them because it was the first game last year and they have a new coaching staff.”

Louisa-Muscatine hired a new coach, Matt Shoultz, after three years under previous coach Andrew Genz.

Cavanagh said this week the team was working towards eliminating the fixable mistakes they saw during the Gator Bowl Scrimmage against Iowa City Regina.

After a Monday film session, Cavanagh said he felt the team learned quite a bit about small things that need to change.

“We just talked about the mistakes we made and that they were correctable. For the most part we did well and there’s just some things you can learn from watching (film).”

On having a scrimmage against Regina rather than a inter-squad scrimmage, Cavanagh said it gets players game-like reps and prepares them for some of the stresses of game situations.

The scrimmage aspect was especially helpful for the younger members of the squad, he said, because it helps them get the early season jitters out.

There will only be a varsity game with kick off at 7 p.m. Friday night at Louisa-Muscatine.
