Iowa Mennonite School senior Emma Beachy, daughter of Wanda and David Beachy of Kalona, was recently named a Semifinalist by the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

“I’m pretty excited,” Beachy said. “It’s a really exciting opportunity.”

Beachy has been involved in Band, Chapel Committee, Choir, Compassion Club, Drama, Math Club, Pep Band, Piano, Praise Band, Reflector (Iowa Mennonite’s school newspaper), Silver Cord, Student Government, and Track while at Iowa Mennonite School.

Beachy said that, while she’s eagerly waiting to see if she becomes a National Merit finalist later in the year, she’s also looking ahead to college.

“I’m definitely planning on going to college somewhere,” Beachy said. “I’ve been looking at a few different Mennonite colleges, but I haven’t decided yet.”

To become a Finalist, Beachy and her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
