ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

When the new legislative session begins in January, a local state representative will be leading the House Public Safety Committee.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, Speaker of the House Linda Upmeyer announced that District 78 Rep. Jarad Klein (R-Keota) would chair the committee.

“Rep. Klein has become a go-to voice when discussing drug policy and initiatives that keep our communities safe,” Upmeyer said. “He will do a wonderful job leading the Public Safety Committee.”

Klein, who earlier this month won a fourth term in the House, has served on the Public Safety Committee since his first term.

“As a farmer, when I was first elected, I thought everything I’d do was going to be ag-related,” Klein said. “But, I found myself really enjoying public safety.”

Klein said that the committee is unique in the Legislature because it often has to work in tandem with other committees on various issues.

As examples, Klein said that the Public Safety and Public Health committees will work together on a needle exchange program, while his committee would work with the Judiciary Committee on sentencing reform.
