The school day got a little cooler for students and Mid-Prairie West and Mid-Prairie East elementary schools Tuesday, September 12 as students were treated to free ice cream, courtesy of Bob and Katie Shaw.

The couple from Spirit Lake recently celebrated 50 years of marriage and their 32 nd year selling ice cream from their truck. They were provided with free ice cream from sponsors Wells Blue Bunny, Fareway, and Diamond Vogel paints.

The duo were then tasked with giving away as much ice cream as possible, which allowed them to make the trek to Wellman and Kalona.

“We’ve never done anything like this. Normally we quit on Labor Day up in the lakes region,” Bob Shaw said.

After students and teachers alike were given their frozen treats, the Shaws gathered all the students together for a big thank you to Blue Bunny for providing the popsicles and ice cream sandwiches for the kids to enjoy.

This stop was the middle of a 14-day trip with stops to follow in LeClaire, Dubuque, Waukon, Charles City, and Algona before going home.

Bob said where the truck stops is usually just an impulse decision.

“We plan maybe anywhere from a day to a half hour ahead. It’s real highly structured,” he said.

“Keeps it fun, impulsive and just happy for everyone.”

When Katie initially brought the idea to Bob, he said he turned it down at first, but the couple has been selling ice cream ever since.
