ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

In the city of Wellman, 2018 was a year of getting things in line for the future.

That does not mean there were no milestones for the city, however.

“Probably the biggest thing we had in town was RAGBRAI coming through town,” Mayor Ryan Miller said. “It was the first time in Wellman. It was a lot of work leading up to it, but I think everyone had a good time seeing 30,000 bikes in downtown Wellman. I thought it turned out really well.”

Miller also pointed out that the city is now a full staff.

“We have a really good group of employees working here in town,” he said. “The gentleman (Tim Garrett) we hired to do our water and wastewater just finished up his first year. He’s done a great job getting our plants in shape and doing some upgrades to the plants. They’re running a lot smoother now.”

Miller said that there were no major projects in the city over the past year.

“It’s more just a lot of little things and trying to get those done,” he said.

The city began work on removing dead and dying ash trees from city property and rights-of-way.

“A few years ago, we had 99 trees on the list that were on rights-of-way and in public parks that were going to have to come down,” Miller said. “It looks like it’s moving a lot faster with these trees dying off faster than what we thought. Hopefully this winter, we’ll have 30-40 of them taken down, and probably the rest of them next year.”
