ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Kalona City Council Monday approved two bids that will split the issuing of $3.9 million in General Obligation Bonds for the Community Center project. Both CBI Bank and Trust and Hills Bank and Trust will offer rates varying from 2.6 percent for the first three years to 4.05 percent for the final five years. The payments will begin in 2018 and end in 2036.

The Kalona Volunteer Fire Department will be celebrating its 100th birthday next year. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh told the City Council Monday that fire officials would like to combine some of their observations with the Aug. 26 Kalona Celebration, which would include an open house at the fire station.

An open house will be held at the Community Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. Planned is a group photo of school alumni in the old gym.

The growing pile of brush on the city lot east of the downtown will soon be gone. A chipping company will soon grind the brush and some members of the Amish community will remove the chips.

Schlabaugh said the city will apply for a Trees Forever trees grant for up to $10,000 that would be used to improve the parks.
