ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Lone Tree girls track team got some use out of their spikes for the first time this season in a co-ed meet at West Burlington.

The team placed fifth of six teams at the meet and won two events.

In the 100 meter hurdles, Emily Feldman and Holley Johnson had a 1-2 finish. Feldman came out on top by about three-fourths of a second. Their other win came in the shuttle hurdle in the form of a new meet record. Johnson, Skylar Smith, Zoie Simonsen and Feldman beat the previous meet record by two seconds.

Lone Tree girls track coach Caylon DeVaul said the team was really excited with their first meet performance and just getting out on the track.

“They were nervous, but excited to run against someone in a different uniform,” DeVaul said.

He said, especially with some of the younger kids, the first meet works to calm their nerves.

“Our girls were excited, they were competitive and that was good to see,” DeVaul said.

“To get some of those jitters out and get those runs in was good.”

DeVaul said there were some good surprises in the field events as well. Freshman Allison Marshek, who threw in the low 20s in shot put during their last indoor meet threw a 26-04.

“Allison Marshek threw low 20s (at the Central Indoor) and then she went out and told coach she felt really relaxed and threw 26-feet and placed,” DeVaul said. “It kind of caught us off guard and that throws another thrower in the mix.”

For the distance runners, Macie Bopp was four seconds off a personal best on the 1500, coming in fifth place at 5:51.03. She ran a 12:51.93 in the 3000 and Natalie Patterson was just behind her in fifth place at 13:03.98.

Heather Geiger had the top finish for Lone Tree sprinters, finishing sixth in the 400 at 1:18.29.

Lone Tree’s only relay on the day was the shuttle hurdle and DeVaul said that was by design. He said he just wanted the team to get out and run their fastest without worrying about handoffs.

Lone Tree had a home meet scheduled for April 9 that has been rescheduled for April 16.

Team score: 50 points, 5th of 6 teams.
