ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Wellman City Councilperson Bob Goodrich thinks the city can do a better job addressing nuisance properties.

Goodrich expressed his frustrations at the Monday, Nov. 19 council meeting.

“There’s a lot of stuff in these ordinances we need to clarify because I don’t think the property owner should be able to tell the city if his property is clean enough,” Goodrich said. “You need to decide how far you want to go on these abatements. In our own ordinance, the council can actually do anything that is inside state law without any action.”

He pointed out that there are a handful of properties that the city is constantly dealing with regarding cleanup.

“With some of them, it’s a never-ending thing,” Council person Tracy Owens agreed.

Goodrich suggested that the city be more aggressive with its abatement efforts.

“We clean it up, we do the maintenance on it and put it on the property,” he said. “Maybe we get to the point where we own the property. We’ve been discussing this a long time, and nothing is happening.”

He asked what kind of time frame the city gives property owners for cleanup.
