State Sen. Dan Zumbach brought his campaign for secretary of agriculture to Kalona last Friday.

Zumbach, who serves District 48 (Delaware County and parts of Linn, Jones and Buchanan counties), is drawing on his farming and legislative experience in his quest for the agriculture post.

“I farm; I love to farm; I continue to farm,” Zumbach said. “That’s my passion.

“I saw this as an opportunity where I could go back to focusing just on agriculture, which is where my passion and hard work is.”

Zumbach said that his 40 years of non-stop farming and his experience as chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee set him apart from the other candidates in the race.

“There are five good people running for this office,” he said. “My ability to communicate and collaborate with people is going to be the asset that the rest of them can’t offer.

“I’d like to think my motives are genuine. I’m not a climber. I will serve Iowa to the best of my ability. I’m passionate about promoting Iowa and Iowa agriculture.”

The seat is currently held by Mike Naig, who was recently appointed by Gov. Kim Reynolds after Bill Northey was tapped to become U.S. Undersecretary of Agriculture.

Zumbach said there were some discussions with Reynolds about the appointment before she appointed Naig, who was Northey’s deputy secretary.
