ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Central Michigan Head Coach Mike Gawlik had been on the job for exactly nine months when he scored his first recruit of the 2019 class as Mid-Prairie outside hitter Jaedynn Evans made a verbal commitment to the Chippewa on Oct. 28.

“I went there this past summer and I loved it,” stated Evans. “I fell in love with the coaches right away, and the school as a whole. I was extremely excited to tell them.”

Gawlik, according to the CMU volleyball website, served as an assistant for Michigan State University for 11 years before getting this head coaching position. While working with the Spartans, he was the defensive coordinator, helping work with defensive specialists and blockers, and also served as the recruiting coordinator.

His pitch seems to have struck a chord with Evans, which she says focused on the mental aspect of the game.

Gawlik was told he was too short to succeed in volleyball, but bucked the odds to become Pacific’s all-time leader in digs and games played during his collegiate career

He made it clear when talking to Evans that, at 5’9”, she could still make an impact for the program. “He said, ‘I don’t care how tall you are if you can get the job done,’ and I fell in love with that right away,” said Evans.

The decision is a very early one, coming just after her sophomore season, but Evans said she took multiple visits, but nowhere else held her fancy like CMU.“I went to different places and looked around,” she said. “After, I sorted out pros and cons and I decided that this would be the best fit for me.”
