ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

At their Tuesday, Jan. 8 meeting, Washington County supervisors took no action on a request to consider a resolution to prohibit use of cigarettes, tobacco products, alternative nicotine products and vapor products on Washington County property.

The request, from the county’s Health Department, is mainly concerned with children and adolescents.

Supervisors asked for further information regarding studies, especially with vapor products, how widely it would cover county property such as campgrounds and outdoor trails and all county-owned buildings.

Supervisor Richard Young made a motion to table the resolution for later consideration, but the motion died for lack of a second.

Board members, however, agreed to review the request and hold further discussions about it.

Also at the Jan. 8 meeting, the board acknowledged a bid of $79,460 to re-roof the bell tower on the courthouse.

Auditor Dan Widmer said the tower tiles have become a hazard, noting that broken pieces have been falling off and could strike a person or vehicle.

Widmer added that the contractor has made the project a top priority, meaning it would start as soon as weather permits.
