ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

A pair of Mid-Prairie educators is organizing a trip for students to North Carolina to help rebuild homes and communities devastated by Hurricane Florence.

Originally planned for late November, the trip has been pushed back to February because workers in North Carolina are still restoring basic services to the area that was among the hardest hit by the hurricane.

For the past several school board meetings, Amy Shalla, the alternative learning center principal, and Matt Freel, a behavioral interventionist, have been reporting on plans.

Much of the funding will come from community donations. Businesses and individuals in Kalona and Wellman need to support these fundraising efforts in any way they can.

“Students will miss four days of school,” Freel wrote in a fundraising letter to local businesses. “But the lessons they will learn on the trip will be immeasurable.”

While reading, writing and arithmetic are the basics of education in our schools, lessons about the values of community service are equally important.

These projects and lessons bring communities together. They teach students the importance of community and helping others. In a nation so bitterly divided over politics, these lessons of coming together to help others in the community are invaluable.
